Get Started

Great coffee starts with quality beans, and the tools to make them shine.

Start Your Coffee Adventure

Getting started with pour-over coffee should feel empowering, not overwhelming. Pour-over brewing is one of the most rewarding ways to make coffee at home - it gives you control over every step and highlights the unique flavors in your beans. In the video above, we walk you through the essentials so you can brew confidently from day one.

Our founder and head roaster, Jerry, gets you started on your journey here.

Below, you’ll find the key gear that will make your pour-over setup easy and effective - along with why each piece matters.

You’ll hear all about:

  • Essential pour-over coffee equipment

  • What to look for in a kettle

  • Why a scale is important

  • How to make your beans their best

Gooseneck Kettle

Control matters in pour-over. A kettle with a gooseneck spout lets you pour slowly and precisely, ensuring even wetting and extraction.

Why it’s worth it: Without control, water can rush unevenly through the grounds, leading to bitter or weak coffee. A gooseneck kettle dramatically improves consistency.

Key recommendations:

  1. Get a kettle with a gooseneck spout. This allows you to better control the flow of water.

  2. Look for something temperature controlled - this ensures your coffee doesn’t get scalded by water that’s too hot. This feature is also extremely helpful for brewing specialty teas (though we prefer coffee!)

  3. Start with a temperature of 206F - this is Jerry’s favourite.

Electric Scale

Consistency is key. A scale helps you measure coffee and water accurately, and a timer helps you control bloom and brewing duration.

Even a basic digital scale makes it much easier to repeat results from brew to brew.

Jerry’s Recommendation: For one cup of pour over coffee, we suggest 18g of coffee for 250g of water.

Paper Filters

Each dripper needs the right filter - paper, cloth, or metal - sized to match your brewer. Paper filters are most common and give a clean, bright cup.

Jerry’s recommendation: Wet your filter before you pour in your ground coffee. This helps to remove any dust and ensures the filter is evenly moist. Trust us!

Brewer

There are lots of different brewers on the market. As long as you purchase a good-quality brewer, with the right filters, you’ll make a great cup of coffee.

However, we recommend the Hario V60 dripper because it removes the most intimidating part of pour-over: timing and pouring precision.

The V60 Switch combines the clarity of a classic pour-over with the forgiveness of immersion brewing. Instead of worrying about perfect pour speed or exact bloom timing, you can simply add your filter and coffee grounds, pour in hot water, and let it steep.

When you’re ready, flip the switch at the bottom and the coffee flows cleanly into your cup.

This gives you:

  • More control over strength and extraction

  • Consistent results, even if you’re brand new to pour-over

  • A cleaner, brighter cup than most automatic brewers

If pour-over has ever felt intimidating, this dripper is an ideal starting point — and it’s still loved by experienced brewers for its flexibility and reliability.

Burr Grinder

Similar to the brewer above, there are loads of different grinders on the market. Though they are not all created equal, keep an eye out for a burr grinder. Burr grinders are special because they really grind the beans, they don’t crush the beans, like some other types do.

We recommend the Fellow Opus All-Purpose Grinder because freshly ground coffee is the easiest way to make your cups taste noticeably better - and the Opus makes it effortless.

Its 40 mm conical burrs produce even, consistent grinds that highlight the sweetness, body, and clarity of your coffee - perfect for pour-over. The powerful motor handles everything from espresso to cold brew, so you can explore other brewing styles without needing a new grinder.

With intuitive controls and a sleek, compact design, the Opus is easy to use every day and looks great on your counter. Upgrading from pre-ground coffee or a blade grinder, you’ll immediately taste the difference - richer, more flavorful cups with minimal fuss.

Coffee Beans

And of course, Jerry wouldn’t have done his job if he didn’t talk about beans! The above tools and equipment can make any coffee taste better. But the easiest way to delicious coffee is to work with quality, locally roasted beans.
